If you operate a home based business, your business blog is an essential aspect of your content marketing and social media marketing plan. In fact, it may be the core of your internet presence from which all of you marketing proceeds. You must not take it lightly, handle it with care and utmost dedication.
The reason why so many home businesses fail to attract a large base of dedicated readers is due, in large part to a poor blogging strategy. This is not exclusive to home businesses. Many large and otherwise successful businesses also use poorly conceived blogging strategies.
In this series, I will share some blogging mistakes that can ruin your blog as well as some thoughts on how to fix them.
I made many of these mistakes when I first started out online and I don’t want you to fall into the same trap I fell in. In fact this series comes out of a need on my part to tighten up my blog as I get ready to begin publishing and selling ebooks online.
Be certain that you are not making these mistakes with you business blog. And if you are, then consider if this applies to your situation and blog. If it does, simply make the necessary changes and go on your way!
1. Avoid excessive ads, especially pop up ads!
Readers dislike being distracted by .distracting ads. They visit your blog for relevant information. If your site has pop-up ads all over the place, you can be sure your readers will leave your blog and find another place to find the information. And they have a multitude of options.
If they do, do not sit around and moan over it, fix it! Make the necessary changes. I read a lot of political sites, many of which are way over the top in their use of pop-up ads. It irritates me greatly. If will eventually find a blog which has the same information without all the annoying ads.
In order to grow your blog you must attract AND keep readers. Pop-ups are an easy way to get rid of readers like me.
There is nothing wrong, in my opinion, with ads. I know you have to make a living, so do I. I use ads. But avoid ads which distract and alienate your readers. Loyal, regular readers are a precious commodity. Treat them like it!
